“And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. ”
As Moses prepares Joshua to lead Israel into the Promised Land, he delivers this charge rooted in the Lord's own character: the Lord Himself goes before His people, remains with them, and will neither fail nor forsake them. The doubled command—'fear not, neither be dismayed'—flows directly from that promise, not from human resolve. This verse reveals a God who leads the way into unknown territory and stays present through every trial, a faithfulness later fulfilled in Christ, who is Immanuel and who pledges, 'I am with you alway.' It assures believers that divine companionship, not circumstances, is the ground of courage.
On this Monday in Ordinary Time, the week stretches ahead with its ordinary duties, decisions, and possible anxieties. Deuteronomy 31:8 meets us at the threshold of a new workweek, reminding us that the same Lord who went before Joshua goes before us into emails, conversations, and uncertainties. Ordinary Time is not empty time; it is the season for living daily by the promise that God neither fails nor forsakes His own.
Begin the day by naming whatever feels daunting and deliberately placing it under the truth that the Lord goes before you. Refuse to let fear set the agenda; instead, move forward in the quiet confidence that His presence is already there. Let this verse reframe every transition or unknown as an invitation to trust rather than to dread.
Lord, You go before me and will not fail or forsake me. Quiet my fears and give me courage to walk in the assurance of Your faithful presence today. Amen.
